Perfect for adventurous travelers looking for an exciting alternative to the traditional Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek 4 Days combines breathtaking scenery, physical challenge, Andean culture, and the unforgettable experience of arriving at Machu Picchu through one of Peru’s most impressive trekking routes.
Your Salkantay adventure begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Cusco, usually around 4:30–5:00 a.m. We travel by tourist transportation through the beautiful Andean landscapes toward Mollepata, where we stop for breakfast and prepare for the trek.
We continue to Challacancha, the starting point of the hike. From here, we begin walking through the Andean valleys surrounded by impressive mountains and traditional agricultural communities. After approximately 3 hours of hiking, we arrive at Soraypampa, located at around 3,900 meters (12,795 feet), where lunch and our first campsite await.
In the afternoon, we hike to the spectacular Humantay Lake, situated at approximately 4,200–4,220 meters (13,780–13,845 feet). The turquoise waters contrast beautifully with the snow-covered Humantay Mountain. After enjoying the scenery and taking photographs, we descend back to Soraypampa for dinner and overnight camping.
After an early breakfast, we begin the most demanding day of the Salkantay Trek. The trail gradually climbs through the high-altitude landscape toward the Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the trek at approximately 4,630 meters (15,190 feet).
As we ascend, the views become increasingly spectacular, with the massive Salkantay Mountain and surrounding peaks dominating the landscape. At the pass, we take time to rest, enjoy the panoramic scenery, and appreciate the dramatic high-Andean environment.
We then begin a long descent through rocky terrain toward Wayracmachay, where we stop for lunch. The landscape gradually changes as we leave the high mountains behind and enter a greener environment.
In the afternoon, we continue descending toward Chaullay and the beginning of the cloud forest. After arriving at our campsite, we have dinner and rest after this challenging day.
We start the morning surrounded by the lush vegetation of the cloud forest. The trail continues downhill through a dramatic transition from the high Andes to the warmer tropical environment.
Along the route, we pass waterfalls, streams, fruit plantations, coffee-growing areas, and small local communities. The vegetation becomes increasingly dense as we approach the Santa Teresa valley.
After lunch in the La Playa or Sahuayaco area, we continue toward Hidroelectrica by local transportation, depending on the selected route and tour arrangement.
From Hidroelectrica, we follow the railway and walking trail toward Aguas Calientes, the town located below Machu Picchu. The approximately 3-hour walk provides beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the Urubamba River.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, we check into our hotel, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the following day’s visit to Machu Picchu.
Today is the highlight of your Salkantay adventure: Machu Picchu.
After an early breakfast, we travel by bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of the Machu Picchu Archaeological Site. With your professional guide, you will explore the ancient citadel and learn about its history, architecture, temples, terraces, and extraordinary mountain setting.
Depending on your ticket and circuit, you may have additional time to enjoy selected viewpoints and archaeological areas within Machu Picchu.
After the guided visit, we return to Aguas Calientes, where you can have lunch or enjoy some free time before boarding your train. The journey continues to Ollantaytambo, followed by tourist transportation back to Cusco.
